New testing kit for glycemic carbohydrates

Megazyme International Ireland has announced the imminent release of its new test kit for the integrated measurement of dietary fibre and glycemic (available) carbohydrates.

A world leader in the development and supply of novel tests procedures for dietary fibres, Megazyme is an innovative, Irish biotechnology company, which specialises in the development of test kits for the food, feed, fermentation and beverage industries.

With worldwide consumer interest in the carbohydrate levels in foods, Dr. Barry V. McCleary, Technical Director and Co-owner, Megazyme International Ireland, concluded that a need existed for a straightforward method for measurement of glycemic carbohydrates.

Glycemic carbohydrates are those that are rapidly degraded and absorbed in the human small intestine and contribute to the glycemic response of the individual.  These carbohydrates include simple sugars (sucrose, glucose and fructose), digestible starch, maltodextrins and lactose. While methods do exist for the separate measurement of each of these components, the testing kit developed by Megazyme will be the first integrated procedure for the measurement of these components as a group.

This greatly simplifies measurements and yields values that will be meaningful to scientists, nutritionists and the consumer alike. Many of the methods developed at Megazyme have gained international approval as Official Methods of AOAC International.

To enhance its research developments, Megazyme has recently opened a new Innovation Centre and employed a team of top molecular biologists. Research efforts to date have resulted in the development of over 40 new test kits for the wine and food industries.

Megazyme is exhibiting at FiE, Hall 21, Stand H91.
