We’re excited to announce upcoming enhancements to the Megazyme ® by Neogen ® β-Glucan Assay Kit (Yeast and Mushroom) (SKU 700004358; K-YBGL), designed to improve your testing experience and expand the range of sample types supported. The new β-Glucan Assay Kit (Yeast and Mushroom) will be available from October 1, 2025.
  What’s New?

Expanded Sample Compatibility: Now includes protocols for liquid samples and new matrices such as algal β-glucan

Reduced Reaction Time: Condensed from 7 hours to 4 hours 25 minutes, improving lab efficiency and throughput

Refined Accuracy: Updated methodology improves accuracy, often yielding higher β-glucan results in mushroom samples, while maintaining assay integrity and reliability.
Alpha-amylase addition designed to improve performance in high-starch matrices such as mushrooms grown on grain (MOG)

These enhancements are the result of customer feedback and a continued focus on delivering scientifically robust tools that meet the demands of evolving sample types and modern testing environments.
Early Access to Evaluate the Kit
We recognize that implementing changes to laboratory workflows takes careful planning. To support a smooth transition, we are releasing an evaluation version of the upcoming kit format with the following details: YBGL for R&D evaluation (SKU: 700007726; Ref Code: K-RDYBGL). This provides an opportunity to compare the current and updated kit formulations under your existing workflows.
On October 1, 2025 , the β-Glucan Assay Kit (Yeast and Mushroom, K-YBGL; 700004358) will be updated to include the improvements outlined above. At that point, the evaluation product will be discontinued, and the original kit format will no longer be available .
To avoid any disruptions, we recommend evaluating the updated product soon to help ensure you’re prepared for the upcoming changes.
  More information
A communication will be sent in the coming days to recent customers, containing important details on how to request the evaluation kit. You can view the communication [ View ] .
Product instructions, Mega-Calc™, validation report, Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the evaluation product (YBGL for R&D evaluation, K-RDYBGL;700007726) are available below.

The 2022 Clean Label Conference is the industry’s only product development event dedicated to providing practical, impartial, “how-to” formulation advice to R&D and applied food scientists. Information will help product developers meet new product goals such as foods with simplified ingredient labels and that are plant-based and reduced in sugar and salt.
Labelling Fiber & Sugar: Maximizing Clean Label Advantages, Minimizing Class Action and Recall Risk
  Wednesday May 25, 2022 | 10:30am-11:15am
This presentation will discuss labelling requirements for dietary fiber and sugars under the new regulations. When dietary fiber labelling is done correctly, commercial advantages can result which include fiber content claims and accurate calories content both of which are highly valued by consumers. An incorrect fiber labelling may lead to significant business risks for food manufacturers. Common assumptions and mistakes in food labelling resulting in class action lawsuits and competitor legal action for misbranding will be presented. New food ingredients and processing aids, such as enzymes and their implications in the area of clean labels, will be reviewed.
  Speaker: David Plank
David Plank - is the Managing Principal of WRSS Food & Nutrition Insights and a Senior Research Fellow at the Dept. of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota. WRSS Food & Nutrition Insights proudly represents the NEOGEN product range Megazyme, in the United States.

Fiber Quantification in Baked Goods: Current methods and regulations
Dietary fiber fortification has become a growing trend in the Baked Goods food industry as consumers continue to value lower net carb, ketogenic friendly food products. However, the types of dietary fibers compatible with Baked Goods like RS4, RS2 resistant starches, inulin, polydextrose, and soluble corn fiber among others present unique challenges for accurate analytical measurement. Further, many Baked Goods manufacturers are not aware of how standard processing can affect the final quantification of non-digestible carbohydrates in their products and rely solely on database calculations from their formulations for determining their Nutrition Facts Label. This leaves them vulnerable to over-declaring dietary fiber, under-declaring calories and misrepresenting the unofficial net carbohydrates content of their products. This presentation will discuss the requirements for labeling under the new FDA regulations, resulting commercial advantages and potential pitfalls. Risk of class action lawsuit and competitor challenge for food manufacturers relying on calculated dietary fiber and not using official AOAC methods for analysis for determination of non-digestible carbohydrate content will be discussed and relevant case studies will also be presented.
